Our Blue Herons Have Returned To The North Country

On  Friday March 19th  three Blue Herons were spotted at the Red Barn Preserve in the Rookery.  This is exactly to the day – the same date as they returned last year.  Since then more have followed and I would estimate at least 20 are currently in the nests as of this date.  Typically the males arrive first and select a nest.  The females follow later and choose a mate.  They lay eggs, raise their young and are gone from the Rookery by early July.  It’s a great time to visit the Red Barn Preserve to observe these birds.  You will need binoculars, cameras, warm apparel, and appropriate shoes.

Our Story Walk trail is becoming very popular.  Bridget Whalen Nevin and Erin Dicaprio Begel from the Morristown library have worked hard to hang the pages of children’s books along the Yellow Trail.  They change the books regularly and are now showing the third book.  Earlier this week nearly 40 children from the Hammond Central School system showed up to take advantage of a blue sky warm day.  Stewarts Shops donated $350 to Museum to enable our volunteers to build permanent wood fixtures for mounting the children’s book pages.

A team of volunteers are working hard to prepare for the Farmhouse Open House planned for May 29th.  Nearly three years have gone by since the house renovation project was started.  Allan and Lorraine Bogardus would not recognize the place if they were alive today.  The renovation work includes a new kitchen, new bathrooms, new hard wood floors, new roof, new bedrooms, and a new heating system.  We expect to have central air conditioning installed by June 1st

The museum has awarded a contract to a local contractor to replace the stone wall fence along River Road East in the area of the farmhouse.  The existing stone fence has collapsed leaving an eye sore to visitors arrive to hike the trails.

The museum has also awarded a contract to do serious repairs to the outside of the downtown museum building.  The building is nearly 110 years old and showing distress on the side facing Morristown Bay.

Another group of volunteers are working a project to celebrate Morristown’s 200 year anniversary.  More about this later.

There is a lot going on and plenty of things to do.  We are on Facebook (Morristown Gateway Museum) and regularly post pictures of our activities.  If you would like to volunteer to help we would welcome you.  I have posted by phone number below.  Feel free to reach out to us.  See you soon.
